BALDWIN FIRE DEPARTMENT

On August 15, 1951, the Baldwin Board of Fire Commissioners authorized the formation of Hose Company No.4. as the need for additional protection in the northern most district of Baldwin was realized. Chief Charles Hoffman stated that a meeting would be held for this purpose with volunteers from the Department ranks as a nucleus. The old Ahrens Fox 1000-Gallon Pumper was assigned to Hose No.4 and was stored in Hose No.3’s firehouse on Baldwin Avenue. This would be their headquarters until their new building was built at its present location in North Baldwin. 

On September 19, 1951, a list of the newly elected officers was presented to the Fire Commissioner at their meeting and was accepted. It was at this meeting that they were officially declared a Company of the Baldwin Fire Department. 

The membership was trained Firefighters of Hose Company Three and some from other Baldwin fire companies and area residents. The newly formed Northern most engine company firehouse was newly built on the intersection of Grand Avenue and Rose Boulevard in 1951. They responded with their used Ahrens Fox Fire Engine until their new state of the art 1955 Mack Thermodyne Fire Engine was purchased and put in service. 

Hose Company Four (The Bull Dogs) today over twenty members strong has responded out of the Rose Boulevard Firehouse for the past seventy years with pride and excellence.
