Working Monday through Friday, these dedicated professionals complement the efforts of our volunteer members by responding to medical emergencies, providing essential pre-hospital care, and helping ensure residents receive prompt, professional assistance when they need it most. Important Update on Ambulance Billing
On April 9, 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law the 2022-2023 NYS Budget. Part KK of this legislation amended Section 209-b of the General Municipal Law to allow fire departments previously not permitted to bill for ambulance services to begin doing so beginning July 8, 2022.
The Baldwin Fire District is committed to providing top-quality emergency services for our community. On March 1, 2024, the Baldwin Fire District began billing insurance companies for ambulance transportation services provided by the Baldwin Fire Department.
Here’s What You Need to Know:
- Helps cover rising costs for ambulances, medical equipment, and EMS training.
- Reduces the burden on taxpayers by using insurance reimbursement instead.
- Ensures the Baldwin Fire Department can continue to provide excellent EMS services.
- If you are transported to the hospital by ambulance, your insurance company will be billed directly.
- Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover this service.
- A professional billing company will handle everything securely on behalf of the Fire District.
- You will NOT receive a bill.
- By law, if you do not have insurance, you cannot be billed for ambulance transport.
- EMS will always respond and provide emergency care, no matter what.
- No out-of-pocket billing for residents except if you do have insurance and there is a deductible
- If you have insurance, it’s already part of your coverage and premiums.
- This program helps the Fire District recover money already paid to insurance companies —not from you directly.
- No insurance card is needed at the time of transport.
- You’ll simply be asked to sign a form authorizing the billing.
Yes. All information is securely encrypted and protected by both the billing company and EMS.
No billing will occur unless you are transported to the hospital.
- All funds will go into a special Ambulance Fund.
- The money will be used only to maintain and improve EMS services.
Yes, many fire departments across Long Island and New York State now bill insurance to support volunteer services.
In short...
- You will still receive the same professional emergency care — no change.
- Insurance companies will be billed for ambulance transports.
- No resident without insurance will ever be billed.
- This helps keep our EMS strong without raising your taxes.
We appreciate your support as we make this important change to better serve our community.
